WELCOME & OPENING REMARKS

9:15 AM – 10:00 AM | Privacy Roundup

Speakers: Nadia Jandali Chao (Lerners LLP) and Jaime McKibbon (Lerners LLP)

Join our privacy team as they unpack significant privacy law developments from the past year. The panel will examine key developments from matters before Canadian courts and regulators, and legislative and policy developments across Canada, including Ontario’s recent reforms to FIPPA and MFIPPA, new regulations under the Enhancing Digital Security and Trust Act (EDSTA), and renewed federal efforts to modernize private-sector privacy legislation. Attendees will gain practical insights into the evolving Canadian privacy landscape and the trends likely to shape compliance obligations in the year ahead.

10:00 AM – 10:45 AM | Emerging Trends in Artificial Intelligence

Speakers: Rosario Cartagena (ICES), Liana Di Giorgio (PocketHealth), Andrew Johnson (Lerners LLP) and Nadia Jandali Chao (Lerners LLP)

Our expert panel will examine the legal challenges and governance considerations facing organizations when adopting artificial intelligence. The discussion will explore how organizations are managing AI procurement, contractual risk, and compliance while responding to evolving expectations from Canadian privacy regulators and policymakers. Panelists will also discuss recent guidance on the responsible use of AI, including the IPC and OHRC’s Principles for the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence, as well as lessons emerging from AI investigations and public-sector reviews. Acquire valuable insights into developing effective AI governance practices and deploying AI responsibly in a rapidly evolving regulatory environment.

Coffee Break & Networking

11:00 AM – 12:00 PM | Development and Cyber Breach

Speakers: Stephen Hurd (Charles River Associates) and Nadia Jandali Chao (Lerners LLP)

Led by cyber forensic expert Stephen Hurd of Charles River Associates, this session will take attendees inside a modern cloud extortion incident, from one seemingly routine phishing email to a rapidly escalating cyber and privacy crisis. Through a realistic scenario, the session will trace the fallout in real time, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how organizations respond when an incident unfolds faster than the facts become clear. We will walk through the incident response lifecycle, including when and how to engage incident response professionals, the role of legal counsel, response timelines, and the critical decisions organizations must make under pressure. Because incident response is rarely linear, the discussion will also tackle the messy reality of managing a fast-moving crisis: incomplete information, competing priorities, difficult judgment calls, and the challenge of making consequential decisions when there is no perfect answer.
